The second trimester: scans, iron, and what the check-ups are for

The stretch where most people feel better and the monitoring gets more specific.

Lesson 2 of 5

11 min Text

What this lesson says

  • A detailed anomaly scan is usually done around the middle of pregnancy
  • India's PCPNDT Act makes disclosing the sex of the fetus illegal; a clinic refusing to tell you is obeying the law
  • Screening for gestational diabetes is a routine part of care
  • Anaemia is common in pregnancy in India and is checked and treated actively
  • Blood pressure and urine are checked at every visit for a reason

This is general education. It is not advice about your own situation, and it does not replace seeing a clinician.

Written lesson.
  1. 1. For most people the middle months are the easiest stretch: the early sickness settles, energy returns, and the pregnancy begins to be visible. The monitoring, meanwhile, becomes more specific.
  2. 2. A detailed scan is usually performed around the middle of pregnancy to look at how the baby is developing, organ by organ, along with the placenta and the fluid around the baby. It is longer than an early scan and it is looking for a specific list of things. Ask what it will and will not be able to tell, because it is not a guarantee of anything and it is often taken as one.
  3. 3. One thing it will not tell you is the sex. Under India's Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act it is illegal to disclose the sex of the fetus, and a clinic that refuses is following the law rather than being unhelpful. Anyone offering to tell you is breaking it.
  4. 4. Screening for diabetes that appears in pregnancy is a routine part of antenatal care, usually with a glucose test in the middle months. If it is found, it is managed, and the management is mostly about diet, monitoring and sometimes medication — it is common, and being told you have it is not a failure of anything you did.
  5. 5. Anaemia is watched closely, and in India it is watched closely for good reason: it is common in pregnancy and it affects both how you feel and how the pregnancy goes. Haemoglobin is checked more than once, iron and folic acid supplementation is standard, and if a level is low the response is usually more active rather than a wait. Tell somebody if you are breathless on stairs, unusually tired, dizzy or pale, rather than filing it under pregnancy.
  6. 6. Blood pressure and a urine sample at every visit look tedious and are the single most useful routine in antenatal care. They are how a rise in blood pressure with protein in the urine is caught early, and that condition can develop without you feeling anything at all until it is advanced.
  7. 7. Movements usually become noticeable during this stretch. Getting to know your own baby's pattern now is what makes a change in it meaningful later.
